FILM of SUNSET and DIVISIONS – 3rd & 4th July 2004.

In July 2004, my son Henry Restell left Nelson after 5 formative and enjoyable years at Royal Hospital School; I wanted to mark this occasion in a way which would be memorable and yet would also benefit former pupils who may in the future fall upon hard times, needing the support of others.

With the blessing of the Headmaster (Nick Ward), I engaged a commercial studio to make a film of special relevance to Nelson but with the wider appeal to parents, relatives and indeed former pupils. It is undoubtedly of particular interest to those who are unable to visit the School due (for instance) either to distance or physical frailty yet who wish to remember (or in absentia to participate in) the ethos, atmosphere and the occasion itself. It includes an introduction from Matthew March, a visual tour around the school, a glimpse of the exhibitions and features the build-up to

·Sunset – 3rd July IN FULL · Divisions – 4th July IN FULL.

At Divisions, each House was filmed as the Headmaster took the salute, thus involving all pupils. It had been hoped that the Headmaster’s individual farewell to members of Nelson would be featured close-up; unfortunately, our photographer was not blessed with the Olympian talents necessary to get him back to his post for the following events and therefore that element had to be omitted. Nevertheless, the emotion of the event is well-captured and, naturally enough, the traditional ‘gidges in the air’ is featured. There are also close-ups of Band and Guard in their respective roles. Music featured is by the Band and also from the Chapel service of the 4th July.

After costs have been covered, copyright will transferred jointly to School for use in publicity, etc. and to RHSA, to be applied to the benefit of former pupils by way of grants, loans, etc. Currently, profits exceed £400.
